Kerala on alert as brain-eating amoeba infection cases touch 18

Kerala has heightened vigil over the spurt in infections caused by a rare brain eating amoeba with 18 confirmed cases and two deaths so far. Amoebic meningoencephalitis is generally considered a very rare disease with hardly one or two cases being reported annually.

With the cases on the rise, the state government has declared high alert, launching preventive measures, including chlorination of wells and water tanks across homes, hospitals, hostels and educational institutions.
Currently, there are 18 active cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis across Trivandrum, Kollam, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Malappuram districts. Of them, eight have been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH).
