1 DEAD IN KERALA; OVERFLOWING RIVERS INUNDATE VILLAGES, FARMS

- BY STEPHEN N. R.

In what residents describe as the worst flooding in decades, relentless monsoon rains have unleashed widespread devastation across southern India, submerging villages, destroying crops, and disrupting transport links in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

According to IANS, the overflow of the Mullaperiyar River in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district early yesterday inundated several villages, washed away roads, and left hundreds homeless. Meanwhile, authorities in neighbouring Kerala have issued an orange alert in five districts as heavy rain triggered landslides and floods, claiming at least one life.

The continuous downpour has also forced the cancellation of Nilgiri Mountain Railway services, while a flood alert was sounded across five Tamil Nadu districts, following a sharp rise in the Vaigai dam’s water level.
