The United States is treating the shooting of two National Guards near the White House as a terrorism investigation, FBI director Kash Patel yesterday.

"It is an ongoing investigation of terrorism," Patel told a news conference a day after the shooting left the National Guard members critically wounded and stunned America as it celebrates the Thanksgiving holiday.

The suspect was an Afghan national who had served alongside American troops in Afghanistan, US media reported Wednesday, as Washington labelled the incident an "act of terror."

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, opened fire and wounded the soldiers on patrol Wednesday afternoon, before he was shot and hospitalised, the New York Times, CBS, NBC and others reported.
