Can sacked employee work elsewhere during paid garden leave?

My company terminated my employment three weeks ago and instructed me not to report to work during my three-month notice period. They are treating this period as paid garden leave on condition that I cannot work for another employer during this time. Now I have received a job opportunity, which I have to accept within this period. Does the company have the right to impose this restriction? How can it be withdrawn?
