Bore is the life and soul of area around Severn

WATCHING the wall of water, two or more metres high, travelling up the river that wants to flow in the opposite direction is a strange sight.

So it’s no surprise that myriad myths are attached to the Severn Bore.

According to one legend the Bore once came to the aid of the ancient Britons and their King Caractacus who was being pursued by the Roman army's Second Augustus legion in AD 47.

Caractacus and his followers were fleeing west and waded across the mile wide Severn at Awre to escape their pursuers. The Roman foot soldiers and cavalry began to cross the river, but were drowned by a bore that swept up the channel.
