Continental Launches World's First Rotor-Integrated Sensor for EV Motors, Cutting Rare-Earth Usage

In a major technological leap for electric vehicle (EV) powertrains, German automotive supplier Continental has unveiled the world's first sensor capable of directly measuring temperature inside the rotor of an EV motor.

This innovation—called the e Motor Rotor Temperature Sensor (eRTS)—promises to enhance efficiency, lower costs, and significantly reduce the use of rare-earth materials. Unlike conventional systems that estimate rotor temperature based on external sensors and software algorithms—often with a ±15°C margin of error—Continental's new sensor delivers real-time readings with an accuracy of ±3°C. This unprecedented precision allows manufacturers to optimize the use of high-grade rare-earth magnets, which are typically over-engineered to withstand unkno
