While the beast of inflation has been tamed, or at least on enough of a downward trend to enter the Reserve Bank of Australia's target range, there have still been steep price rises localised to individual commodities or sectors along the way.

Take 2024, which saw major increases in price for cacao, coffee, and container shipping. While 2025 has started with gold prices.

The latest contender? Coconut oil.

Rotterdam's price per metric tonne of coconut oil breached the US$2700 in May. For context, the price at the start of the year was US$1878 per metric tonne, a 46% increase in five months. Go back a year further and the price was a mere US$1108 at the start of 2024 which equates the current price to a 148% increase in the space of 17 months.
