Adequate fuel supplies allay fears of power outage

- ARUNIMA BHARADWAJ

COAL STOCKS AT the country's thermal power plants stood at 60.9 million tonne (MT) as of June 12, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 26.7%. This allays the fears of power outages or supply deficits amid rising mercury levels.

The improvement in stock levels is largely due to increased coal production and dispatches from both public and private sector companies.

At the current level, coal stocks at thermal power plants are at 85% of the normative requirement of 71.45 MT—sufficient to maintain a high plant load factor at generation units.

The government estimates that peak power demand could reach 270 GW during the current summer season. To ensure coal availability, it has rolled out multiple measures, including the mandatory operation of imported coal-based and gas-based power plants.
