Apple flags spyware threat
Financial Express Mumbai
|April 12, 2024
APPLE ON THURSDAY warned its users in over 100 countries, including India, against mercenary spyware attacks such as Pegasus in their devices. However, this time it has not used the word "state-sponsored", as in its previous threat alerts.
-
In a notification on Wednesday, Apple also updated its support page to include tips for users who could be possible targets of the mercenary spyware attack.
"Apple threat notifications are designed to inform and assist users who may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware attacks, likely because of who they are or what they do," the company said.
In October 2023, some Apple users had received a similar spyware attack notification, flagging the possibility of a state-sponsored threat.
In India, this had raised a storm as several Opposition leaders received the notification. The government subsequently ordered an investigation, asking Apple for an explanation on the security of its devices.
It is not clear how many people across the country have received the latest threat warning from Apple.
