THIS YEAR'S SURPLUS monsoon rainfall has boosted kharif sowing and fertiliser demand, but excessive rain in the last fortnight has caused widespread damage to standing crops in Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
"Preliminary reports suggest around 0.15 million hectare (Mha) out of 3 Mha of paddy crop has been impacted by the submergence in Punjab, while the impact on the overall crop condition will be assessed after the withdrawal of monsoon," PK Singh, agriculture commissioner, told FE. Aerial surveys have been conducted in rain-hit regions, he added.
