8th Pay Commission to be formed, 11.5 mn to benefit

PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA Modi on Thursday approved the setting up of the 8th Pay Commission to recommend the norms for pay and pension increments for 10 years beginning January 2026 for central government employees and pensioners, in a move that would cheer up over 11.5 million people.
The announcement ahead of the Delhi assembly elections on February 5 brings to an end uncertainties about a new pay commission following the 7th pay panel chief's suggestion that the decadal exercise should be stopped in favour of annual increments similar to the private sector.
Announcing the decision, information and broadcasting minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the chairman and two members of the panel would be named soon. "There is sufficient time...the report will be received well before the completion of the 7th Pay Commission award period (in December 2025)," he said, adding that the panel would have wide consultations with state governments, stakeholders in the central government and public sector enterprises.
