Railway freight growth slows as 'non-coal' baskets turn sluggish

STAGNANT GROWTH IN "non-coal" freight segments and a lack of strategic diversification in the commodity basket have put Indian Railways in a tight spot. Over recent years, the growth rate of freight segment has fallen — both in volume and value terms.
In FY25, freight revenue growth dropped to just 3.7%, much lower than the 7% reported in FY24, 15% in FY23, and 20.4% in FY22. Freight loading growth has also declined steeply, falling from 15% in FY22 to 3% in FY25.
