Excessive near-work and infrequent eye exams are behind rising myopia rates, especially among children.

According to Longbeach Eye Studio optometrist Annelize van Niekerk, the pervasive use of smartphones, tablets, and computers has significantly contributed to myopia's progression.
"The sustained engagement in these close-up tasks has been linked to the development and progression of myopia. As children spend more time near screens, their eyes strain to focus on nearby objects, leading to elongation of the eyeball and subsequent myopia," she says.
