Concern as flags tied to lampposts along mile-long stretch of road

DEVON County Council has warned of the dangers of hanging flags from lampposts after an outbreak of patriotic mania along a major route in Exeter.

Bridge Road is currently festooned with more than 100 Union and St George flags.
Unknown members of the public have put the bunting up on every street light along a mile-long section of the A379 between the Devon Hotel and Countess Wear roundabout.
The flag flying divides opinion. Many see it as a heartwarming expression of national pride, others as tasteless jingoism or culturally divisive.
Devon County Council would like the issue to go away. It said it is not safe for people to fly anything from a designated street light.
