Wages figures raise PM's hopes on inflation

THERE were no nasty surprises in wages and jobs numbers out today, ahead of a vital moment later in the week for the Prime Minister’s pledge to halve inflation.
The national unemployment rate held steady at 4.2% for September, while average earnings excluding bonuses rose 7.7%. Including bonuses, wages were up 7.9%, more than City experts had predicted at 7.4%, but down from the 8.2% last time.
