1,500 vehicles wrecked in inferno at Luton airport

AN INFERNO which ripped through a multi-storey car park at Luton airport destroying nearly 1,500 vehicles was started after a diesel vehicle caught fire, a fire chief said today.
At least 140 flights due to take off or land have been cancelled as a result, resulting in travel chaos for 25,000 passengers. Firefighters worked through the night to bring the blaze under control.
Chief Fire Officer Andy Hopkinson said he believed the cause to be a diesel-engined vehicle which pulled into a space on level three of Terminal Car Park 2 shortly before 9pm yesterday.
He added: "We have no intelligence at this stage to suggest that this was anything other than an accidental fire that started in one of the vehicles that had not long arrived at the airport. It was not an EV. This was a diesel-powered vehicle."
