A much- respected Scottish dance band leader and legendary proprietor of The Hole i' the Wa' in Dumfries, Max Houliston, decided to host some informal nights where accordionists, fiddle players and the like could bring their instruments and play to an assembled audience.

It was the start of The Dumfries Accordion and Fiddle Club in 1965 which has a fascinating history and a legacy beyond the town.
As audiences eventually grew bigger, Max-who died aged 86 in 2022-introduced a 'guest artiste' format inviting some of his many friends and fellow dance band leaders to appear in Dumfries each month.
