Celebrating new chapter at historic Ewart Library
Dumfries and Galloway Standard
|September 23, 2025
Dumfries Probus Club members booked a date at the newly-renovated parts of the historic Ewart Library in Dumfries for their monthly meeting.
Ewart Library is still very much in use today
The visit was arranged through, and led by, Alison Burgess of the Heritage Service at Dumfries and Galloway Council.
The refurbishment at the Ewart - hailed as the “most noted Renaissance-style library in Scotland”- focussed on maintaining and celebrating the building's 100-year-old heritage, while bringing in modern elements to enhance visitor experience - updating its role as home to public reading, research and community connection.
The impressive two-storey red sandstone building on Catherine Street was funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and officially opened in 1904, on land gifted by Miss McKie - who got to officially opened it.
The refurbishment works included careful restoration of features like the original windows, mosaic flooring and foyer tiles, and the cupola, alongside new artwork and history boards celebrating the library's story.
At the same time, modern touches have been introduced, including updated lighting, improved digital facilities, refreshed spaces and furniture, and better accessibility throughout.
