Record highs of homeless children and rough sleepers

Derby Telegraph

February 27, 2026

A RECORD high number of people sleeping on England’s streets has been branded “devastating” as new data also showed record levels of homelessness among children.

There were 4,793 people estimated to be sleeping rough on a single night in autumn last year, according to the Government's annual snapshot of the situation across the country.

The number is up 3% on the 2024 snapshot (4,667) and is above the previous peak of 4,751 in 2017.

Households and children living in temporary accommodation - a form of homelessness - also hit new record highs, according to other data published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government on Thursday.

A total of 134,760 households were in temporary accommodation at the end of September 2025, up 7% from the same point the previous year.
