'More diversity' and independent shops needed alongside new gateway

DERBY residents and businesses living and working near the city's new Eastern Gateway site have said that while the project is a welcomed initiative, there are other things that should improve alongside it.

The £15 million project will transform the entrance to East Street opposite Derby bus station whilst also giving the east side of the Derbion shopping centre a new entrance.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council, previously said the development was “key to better connecting different parts of the city centre”.

“I think the spirit of the area needs to be restored and its accessibility improved - that is what would drive people here again,” said Caroline Martin at Martin's Fruits and Food Exchange.

“The Eastern Gateway project is a nice initiative, provided it is done right. The council needs to work on the surroundings, too.”
