Early change to Employment Rights Bill a 'step forward' says chamber

AN amendment to the Government's Employment Rights Bill, changing the right to claim unfair dismissal after one day to a period of six months has been welcomed by East Midlands Chamber, which represents hundreds of the region's employers.

On Thursday, ministers abandoned plans to give workers day-one protection against unfair dismissal in a bid to ensure the Bill makes it through Parliament. Other day-one rights to parental leave and sick pay will still go ahead, coming into effect in April.

The Government now intends to introduce the right after six months of service instead - down from the current qualifying period of 24 months - in a U-turn that breaches Labour's manifesto.
