SINCE May 1996, Mr Gundy’s Tavern at 32-34 Ashbourne Road has been entertaining both diners and drinkers.

Discovering Mr Grundy

The pub was developed in what was an empty part of the Grade II listed Georgian House Hotel and when plans were submitted for a second time in December 1995, it was revealed the original planning application for the pub had been rejected because of concerns for nearby Markeaton Street residents.

But who was Mr Grundy?

The pub is named after Clifford Stoppard Grundy, who lived near to the hotel at number 36 Ashbourne Road before his death on January 19, 1991.

Although he had links to Ashbourne Road during the later parts of his life, Mr Grundy had lived throughout the city.

His will, which was published in the Derby Telegraph showed him leaving an estate worth £218,659 while listing 484 Burton Road as his residence - presumingly a nursing home.

Clifford Stoppard Grundy was born on October 31, 1897 to parents Mr Stewart Wood Grundy and Grace Grundy with the family living at Otter Street. While still very young the family moved to White Street.
