Boost for council homes as restrictions removed

CITY CAN KEEP ALL OF THE PROCEEDS FROM RIGHT TO BUY SALES, HELPING IT TO RESTORE STOCK
DERBY City Council's deputy leader has welcomed changes to "inexplicable" Right To Buy restrictions to help boost council housing stock.
The Right To Buy scheme was devised in the 1980s by Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and allowed residents to buy their council homes at a discounted rate.
It allowed thousands of council house tenants to become homeowners - but it has come at a cost to local authorities across the country.
Currently, Derby City Council has more than 12,000 homes on its stock list.
But in 2024, former city council leader Baggy Shanker - now Labour MP for Derby Southclaimed the council had lost around 13.000 houses to Right To Buy, approximately halving the number of homes on its books.
