Community in mourning after legendary showman Luigi de Klerk dies after a long illness

THE Kaapse Klopse community is in mourning after the death of legendary showman Luigi de Klerk on Saturday.

Known for his lekker sê-goed on the microphone at many a competition as the voice of the Klopse over the years, tributes poured in from far and wide.

The Bridgetown boorling filled the Athlone Stadium with his energy and humour and kept fans entertained between shows during the Klopse season.

Adding more hartseer to his tragic death was the fact that he died on morning of yesterday's Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA) Voorsmaakie at Kenilworth, casting a shadow on the rest of this year's buildup to Cape Town Minstrel Carnival on Tweede Nuwejaar (5 January in 2026).
