Hanover Park residents refuse to betaal rent in battle with City
PAID-UP: Residents are convinced homes are theirs
HANOVER Park mense living municipal properties have announced a rent boycott, but the City of Cape Town is warning that nonpayment could result in debt collection, legal action, and eviction.
The Hanover Park Civic Organisation, together with community members, argue that the City's rental housing stock has effectively been paid off, as many beneficiaries have been paying rent for 60 years or more.
They believe tenants have covered the value of the flats several times over and that ownership should have been transferred to them long ago.
