UNDER-fire welfare reforms “mark the moment we take the road of compassion, opportunity and dignity”, the Work and Pensions Secretary has said.

Liz Kendall's claim comes amid a backlash from some Labour MPs who have criticised the “awful” cuts to welfare.

The reforms are aimed at encouraging more people off sickness benefits and into work.

The Government hopes it will help save up to £5billion a year.
