Cho Gue-Sung's 80th-minute header leaves Forest on the back foot for Thursday's return leg in Denmark after spurning a host of chances.
Elliott Anderson fired Forest's best opportunity straight at Midtjylland keeper Elias Olafsson who made a string of fine saves in the first half.
