Toon heroes step closer to trophy dream

- JEREMY CROSS

YOU wait more than two decades for a trip to Wembley, then a couple come along in as many years.

But what Newcastle United fans really want more than anything else is to see their team win a final. Not just get there.

And that chance will happen again next month, after Eddie Howe's side overcame Arsenal at a rocking St James' Park to reach the Carabao Cup final for the second time since 2023.

The number that counts most though is 56. That's how many years since Newcastle won a major trophy.

Arsenal never stood a chance of getting in the way of Newcastle's dream last night.

The stadium was shaking just for the home side's team being read out before kick-off.

Arsenal had been attempting to do what no side had ever done before in the history of the competition. Which was to overcome a two-goal deficit from having lost the first leg at home.

The odds were stacked against them.
