1. Atoms are the microscopic building blocks of the universe. The average human hair contains millions and measures around 500,000 atoms across.

2. The word atom comes from the Greek atom for uncuttable or undivided. It was coined by philosopher Democritus in the 5th Century BC - which shows what he knew.

image3. Atoms are made up of even smaller bits. Each one contains a cluster of protons and neutrons called a nucleus, orbited by negatively-charged electrons. Protons and neutrons can be broken down into quarks.
