SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER staged his own procession in Portrush to take a giant step closer to golfing immortality.

On one of the greatest courses, Scheffler showed once again why he is the greatest golfer on the planet after cruising to Open glory.

And with his first Claret Jug to add to his growing collection of trophies, the American assassin is now three-quar-ters of the way towards golf's Grand Slam.

Despite Scheffler heading into the final round with a four-shot lead, some people held out hope he might stumble somehow. That it wouldn't be a one-man show.

How foolish these optimists were, because no-one else in the field really came close to stopping Scheffler's coronation as the king of the Dunluce Links.

Not playing partner Hoatong Li. Not Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick. And certainly not hometown hero Rory McIlroy.
