INVITING Tui Blue Palm

Tunisia is often described as one of the Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets, but the truth is it’s less of a secret and more of a total revelation. With a flight time of just under three hours from the UK and balmy weather for the bulk of the year (avoid the rainy season from November to March), it’s a firm favourite with Brits.

Greeted by a glorious blend of golden beaches, dazzling blue skies and palm-lined pools, I could see why.

Throw in the world-class ancient Roman and Punic ruins, spice-scented souks, and a welcoming culture, and it proved to be a trip that went far beyond the traditional Mediterranean getaway.

The activity and charm come from a centuries-long history as a cultural melting pot - Berber, Roman, Arab, and French influences shaping the land.

And, as I discovered over a blissful five days in the coastal resort of Hammamet, it’s a spectacular place for a holiday.

My base was the gleaming four-star TUI Blue Palm Beach Hammamet, a modern all-inclusive resort right on the sand. It proved ideal for exploring some of Tunisia’s most beautiful towns, including one that's become a painter's paradise.

That village is the clifftop jewel Sidi Bou Said, perched high overlooking the Gulf of Tunis and famed for its brilliant whitewashed walls and ornate wooden electric-blue doors that dazzle against the sparkling sea.

I made my way to the highest point for the spectacular view, a moment made perfect by sipping the obligatory sweet mint tea. The atmosphere is relaxed, civilised, and utterly picture-perfect.
