A black hole is a huge concentration of matter packed into a very tiny space, creating a gravitational pull so strong that nothing can escape - not even light. This makes them extremely difficult to spot. There could be millions in the Milky Way alone.

Anything that gets too close to a black hole, from a photon of light to a human being, is sucked in by its gravitational field. Boffins call the point of no return its event horizon. The closest-known black hole is apparently a reassuring 1,000 light years away.
