ROUGH WATERS Llarga beach had yellow flag alert

- BY LUCY THORNTON and NATALIA PENZ

A BRITISH brother and sister tragically drowned as their father desperately tried to save them while swimming off a beach.

A boy aged 11 and a girl aged 13 got into trouble in the sea at a Spanish resort on Tuesday night, the Civil Protection force confirmed.

Their dad reportedly entered the water after seeing them struggling and was rescued but sadly his children could not be saved.

Police said conditions were rough, with a yellow flag warning throughout the day - meaning swimming is allowed but caution is advised.

Authorities said lifeguards had left the beach at Llarga in Salou, Tarragona, in Catalonia, for the day less than an hour earlier.

A hotel worker had tried to help the family and police who arrived at the scene also leapt into the sea.
