- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to UN

- BY SIMON MURPHY

HAMAS will have no role in the postwar government of Gaza, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the world yesterday.

Addressing the United Nations via video link, Abbas said his people "rejected" the Hamas October 7 terror attack on Israel, which led to the present catastrophe.

In a passionate speech to the UN General Assembly, Abbas said Palestinians in famine-stricken Gaza "have been facing a war of genocide, destruction, starvation and displacement" by Israel.

Speaking from the West Bank after being banned from New York by Donald Trump, he issued a powerful message: "We say to our sons and daughters in the homeland, in exile and in the diaspora, no matter how much our wounds bleed and no matter how long the suffering lasts, it will not break our will to live and survive.

"The dawn of freedom will emerge and the flag of Palestine will fly high in our skies as a symbol of dignity..."
