No flies on Gary

IF YOU'RE not chasing the salmon that are taking advantage of the water in the rivers and dominating catch returns just now, it's a good time to get a fly-tying fix.

I had some fly-tying chat with my friend Darryl Mooney this week along with a recommended pattern from an author that literally wrote the book on caddis imitations.

Darryl is a Sprite and Partridge pro-tyer from Northern Ireland with decades of experience as an angler and in the tackle industry who's contributed on this page a good few times.

He's normally over at shows at the start of the trout season. I missed him at the BFFI (British Fly Fair International) this year but he will be over for an event at the end of the month in Glasgow.

I have long been a fan of the noted American author, fly tyer and fly fisherman, Gary La Fontaine who sadly passed away in January 2003.
