I'M A new student starting university and leaving home. How should I manage my energy bills?

STARTING university and moving into a new flat or halls is exciting but it's also when many students face energy bills for the first time.

These can be confusing and costly if you're not prepared.

If you're in university-managed accommodation, energy costs are usually included in your rent. It's still worth checking your contract to see what's covered and if there's a cap on usage.

If you're moving into a privately rented flat or shared house, you need to set up and pay the bills yourself.

The first step is to find out who your energy supplier is. Ask your landlord or letting agent, or contact the Meter Point Administration Service for electricity and your gas transporter for gas.

Once you move in, take and submit meter readings on day one to avoid being charged for energy used before you arrived.
