Prison officer fails in lawsuit bid

A PRISON officer sacked for gross misconduct over the death of an inmate has failed in a bid to sue jail chiefs.

Kenneth Aitken, 65, claimed he had been unfairly dismissed by the Scottish Prison Service for failing to ensure Iain Brown was properly monitored after a nurse suspected him of being “intoxicated”.

The 48-year-old prisoner was found dead on the floor of his cell at HMP Shotts the following morning in April last year.

Aitken, who worked for the prison service for over 30 years, said he was not given enough information to require him to apply the prison service's Management of an Offender at Risk (MORS) Policy.
