Scots caddie delivered the immortal line after Medinah glory... I knew boss would win it as Germans never fail in shoot-out

- DAVID MCCARTHY

IN THE NAME OF THE WEE MAN

IT was two hours after the final putt had dropped and Europe had Made America Greet Again.

The wham-bam-thank-you ma'am report that did its best to capture one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time in 2012 had been filed with no time for rubbing off the rough edges, thanks to 6pm in Chicago representing a deadlinebusting midnight in the UK. It was a good old fashioned clatter of the keyboard that couldn't be written until the end because nobody knew what the end would look like.

It came down to Martin Kaymer standing over a six-foot putt, knowing that if it dropped he'd be remembered forever and if it stayed above ground he'd never be allowed to forget it.

Time stood still as 37,000 home fans dressed in red prayed that the German, who had rattled his first putt past from 30 feet, opening the door for Steve Stricker to hole from 10 feet, would bottle it.

Had Kaymer done so, the tie would have been halved and with Tiger Woods coming up the 18th against Francesco Molinari in the final singles match, American hopes of winning the Ryder Cup would have remained alive and kicking.

Deadline pressures meant those of us lucky enough to have been dispatched to Medinah, just north of Chicago, were actually back in the giant media tent glued to the big screen juggling with trying to remain professional when impartiality was impossible.

Kaymer drew the putter head back before brushing the ball gently into the centre of the hole.

It never looked like missing and seconds later the German was jumping into the arms of a Spaniard.

Not captain Jose Maria Olazabal who was further down the fairway monitoring the final match but Sergio Garcia who led the charge of the Europeans watching from the sidelines.
