Fury as hundreds of jobs are axed at Fife plastics complex
ONE of Scotland's biggest industrial sites is to be shut down next year, with hundreds of jobs put at risk amid what a union calls “economic carnage”.
The US owners of Fife Ethelyne Plant (FEP) at Mossmorran, near Cowdenbeath, which produces the base material for plastics, made the announcement at a staff-wide meeting yesterday morning.
The plant is owned by Texas giant ExxonMobil and employs 180 staff directly. In addition to 200 contractors, another 50 roles could be lost as a result of the closure.
No timescale was confirmed but unions are braced for the majority of staff being out of jobs by February.
