Widespread frosts as parts of Wales face a cold start to New Year

WALES is bracing for a very cold start to 2026 with the Met Office forecasting a largely dry and chilly spell as January begins.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are expected to remain mostly dry across the country with sunny periods breaking through at times.

However the clear skies will allow temperatures to drop sharply overnight bringing widespread frosts and patches of freezing fog, particularly in rural valleys and low-lying areas. Motorists heading out early on New Year's Day are advised to take care as icy stretches could develop on untreated roads.

While many areas will stay dry, New Year's Day itself may turn a little breezier with the chance of a few isolated showers moving in from the coast. Despite any sunshine it will feel rather cold with daytime temperatures struggling to rise much above average winter values.
