FM SAYS WALES 'WELCOMING NATION'... BUT ACCUSED OF 'TYING HERSELF IN KNOTS' ON PM'S MIGRATION COMMENTS
THE First Minister of Wales said she would not use “divisive language” following the Prime Minister's remarks on migration.
Baroness Eluned Morgan, the Labour leader at the helm of the Welsh Government, dodged direct answers on whether she backed Sir Keir Starmer’s claim that the UK might turn into an “island of strangers’ without curbing immigration.
During First Minister's Questions, despite several prompts, she chose not to endorse the comments, instead describing Wales as a “welcoming nation”.
Sir Keir has encountered criticism, including from members of his own backbenches, with some suggesting his words bore resemblance to Enoch Powell’s notorious “rivers of blood” speech from 1968 - a notion dismissed by his official spokesperson.
Rhun ap Iorwerth, leader of Plaid Cymru, accused the Prime Minister of trying to “out-Reform Reform” with the comments.
