STAGGERED START TO SEASON NOTHING TO DO WITH OFFICIALS SHORTAGE - WRU
Daily Post
|September 11, 2025
THE Welsh Rugby Union has denied accusations the staggered start to the season at community level is down to a shortage of referees.
-
Last weekend only division one and three games were played in the west, with divisions two and four set to start this Saturday.
‘There were four postponements last weekend, with three of those rearranged for this Saturday.
We understand the reason for the postponement was one wedding involving players, one funeral while the other two were mutually agreed between the clubs in question to play on September 13.
‘The WRU insists there was no lack of refereeing provision for our national league programmes while the staggered start to the season is in place for players and referees to return from holidays and get back into a routine.
“We stagger the start of the season as we are conscious of people coming back from holidays and getting back into their work and leisure routines,’ said WRU community director Geraint John.
“It’s something we trialled last year and something which worked well and we are repeating.
