RWE launches formal consultation for 'Butterfly Solar Farm'
Daily Post
|September 29, 2025
RWE has launched its formal consultation for the proposed 99.9MW Butterfly solar and battery storage project, which would be located south of Wrexham. If consented, the project would generate enough low cost, green electricity to power the equivalent of over 34,775 typical Welsh homes.
-
SOLAR generation represents one of the cheapest forms of electricity generation, helping to lower energy bills at a time when cost of living challenges are front of mind. Butterfly Solar Farm is proposed to be located to the south of Wrexham, adjacent to the A483, and between Johnstown to the West and Bangor on Dee in the East.
RWE is woven into the fabric of Wales' energy system. Since 2010, RWE and partners have invested well over £3 billion to deliver power projects in Wales and is now the country's largest power producer, and number one renewable energy generator. The company directly employs around 350 people in Wales in dedicated offices in Baglan, Dolgarrog, and the Port of Mostyn, and remains committed to empowering the communities in which it operates.
With communities very much at the heart of RWE projects, local people are invited to give their opinions on the Butterfly Solar Farm project, following an informal consultation that was held earlier in the year.
The plans are for a 99.9MW solar and battery storage farm that would help provide a low cost, secure supply of electricity, while also saving over 2.3 million tonnes of CO2, roughly equivalent to planting over 39 million trees¹.
