Wrexham reportedly lining up deal New Zealand international left-back Cacace

Red Dragons ‘on brink of breaking transfer record’

WREXHAM are reportedly on the brink of breaking their transfer record to secure a player who previously made a horror challenge on England’s Kyle Walker.

The Welsh club, backed by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are believed to have settled on a deal for Empoli left-back Liberato Cacace.

Wrexham are expected to cough up an initial £2.16million (€2.5m), with bonuses and add-ons potentially taking the figure up to £4m.

The New Zealand international has been plying his trade in Serie A for the past three-and-a-half years. He has amassed 74 appearances since initially joining on loan from Belgian side Sint-Truiden in January 2022.

Despite Empoli’s relegation from Italy's top flight last season, Cacace has attracted interest from several clubs at that level this summer, including Cagliari, Pisa and Cremonese. However, Sky Sport Italia reports that Wrexham have emerged victorious in the race to sign him following their recent promotion to the Championship.

If confirmed, it would surpass the £2m the Red Dragons spent to bring Reading striker Sam Smith onboard in January.
