A SHORTSIGHTED walker was thought to have fallen more than 500ft to his death after ringing his family to tell them he was lost on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), in poor weather and visibility, an inquest heard.

- By GLYN BELLIS and STEVE BAGNALL

John Aravinth, 20, an Edinburgh University medical student from Southwater, Horsham, West Sussex, had walked up the highest peak in Wales and England, along the Llanberis Path, with his family last May.

But it was windy, raining and cloudy and his father and sister had decided to turn back because they thought it was too dangerous to continue.

However, Mr Aravinth was a keen explorer and confident he could reach the summit alone.

The Caernarfon inquest was told that two hours later he rang his father and told him that he was lost.

Police had also received two "dropped" 999 mobile phone calls from him.

Mr Aravinth was described as "distressed," requesting mountain rescue and saying he was on Snowdon, before the second call ended.
