BEAUTY SPOT PATROLLED TO CATCH THE POACHERS

- By ANDREW FORGRAVE Countryside and Tourism Editor

From vanishing island to disappearing fish

AN Eryri lake was once reputed to have a floating island that caught out unwary cattle as it drifted from shore to shore.

The island had long since vanished - it’s now more likely to be fish that are disappearing.

In response to poaching incidents, enforcement officers at Natural Resources Wales (NRW) have pledged regular patrols at Llyn Y Dywarchen near Rhyd-Ddu. A spokesperson said: “The patrols are in response to a rise in antisocial behaviour and unlicenced fishing in the lake and surrounding area.”

Although a little off the beaten path, with scarse parking, the lake's natural beauty makes it a must for the Instagram brigade. Shoehorned between the peaks of Mynydd Mawr, Y Garn and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the scenery is spectacular - the lake was once nominated by the public as one of the 60 Wonders of Eryri (Snowdonia).
