Cancer cases predicted to soar in Wales over the coming decade
Daily Post
|September 04, 2025
CANCER cases in Wales are forecast to soar over the coming decade, continuing current trends. Despite better treatments, cancer rates are still growing, with 10% more deaths in Wales now than in 2002.
In the 10 years to 2035, modelling projects around 24,000 new cases, up 11% on 2025. Public Health Wales (PHW) said this is largely due to the ageing population in Wales, as cancer is more common in older people.
In the 20 years to 2025, the number of people aged 65 and over in Wales is estimated to have increased by 186,000. Over the next decade, this demographic is projected to grow by another 135,000.
Age-adjusted analysis indicates that cancer rates have remained roughly the same over the past two decades. But despite improving survival rates, overall mortality has increased.
