BUT SOME SKIES TURN PINK AS SPECTACULAR THUNDERSTORM HITS
How the North Wales sky looked as flashes of lightning lit up the darkness, in Rhos-on-Sea and Llandudno. Readers shared some brilliant shots as the storm moved across the region, lighting up the night sky.
CARAVANS were struck and trains punched out of service as a thunderstorm for the ages descended on North Wales on Wednesday night.
Lightning strikes were so numerous that Anglesey was entirely obscured by weather maps showing where they had struck.
One man spoke for many when he commented online: “Never in my life have I seen thunder and lightning like that!”
A wild night for many produced incredible light shows. Night watchers grabbed hundreds of photos of Mother Nature in all her finery as streaks of light lit up the sky. Many woke up bleary-eyed this morning.
The thunderstorm rolled up from South Wales, hugging the Cardigan Bay coast and feeding off surface heating from the land. It was preceded by strong winds and, in some places, hail, prompting campers to rush to tie down tents.
When the storm reached Gwynedd and Anglesey, supercharged cells stalled. “It got real dark, real quick,” said a Llangefni man. At that moment, BBC Wales weatherman Derek Brockway took to X (Twitter) to write: “Gwynedd and Anglesey in the firing line!”
