Autumn trout flourish as river levels drop and Sterkies delivers
Daily News
|March 19, 2026
RAINFALL has eased significantly, with only light, single-figure totals forecast over the next week to 10 days.
-
River levels are steadily dropping and water temperatures are beginning to cool—classic autumn signals that point toward some very rewarding freshwater fishing for those prepared to make the most of it.
Local river anglers have already been quick to capitalise on the improving conditions. As grasshopper activity peaks from late summer into early autumn, these terrestrials become an increasingly important food source for trout.
With aquatic insect life tapering off as the water cools, trout are actively looking up, making this a prime time to be on the river with confidence.
Stillwater fishing has been relatively quiet in recent days. However, this is typical for this transitional period and is expected to change quickly as water temperatures continue to drop and trout begin feeding more aggressively ahead of winter.
