Serb's tie just like 1999 CCTV man's, 'Bespoke design made in Belgrade', Cold case cops to view original clip

- TOM PETTIFOR Crime Editor

AN unusual striped designer tie could hold the key to nailing Jill Dando's killer.

A newly unearthed picture of double murderer Milorad Ulemek shows him in a tie like one worn by a man caught on CCTV after the Crimewatch host's 1999 murder.

Jill was ambushed from behind as she was about to open her front door and killed instantly by a single bullet to her left temple.

At the time, Ulemek was the leader of a notorious unit that carried out assassinations for late Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic.

We first named the Serb, 57, in connection with the killing last year after a facial comparison expert found he was identical to "Man X" in the footage.

A month after the killing, a witness picked out Man X in the CCTV to police as the person she saw "running for his life".

Ulemek, a former French Foreign Legionnaire nicknamed Legija, is an infamous Serbian paramilitary whose units were allegedly responsible for atrocities in the Yugoslav wars.

His tie is understood to have been made by Serbian fashion designer Neven Vrgoc, who handpainted his garments.

Staff at Vrgoc's Belgrade shop were unable to confirm if Ulemek's tie was one of his, saying there was no record of all of his creations.

Vrgoc, who has been pictured with Oliver Reed and King Juan Carlos of Spain, often made one-off ties for clients. He died in 2014.
